The article touches such important issues as the impact of lexical borrowings on the language culture of the ethnic group, the use of internationalisms in modern verbal communication. The language change is considered with regard to domestic sources of language development and the historical transformations in society. Special attention is paid to the vocabulary of the media as the source of changes in the vocabulary of the Russian language. New lexical borrowings serve the language sector in general and certain micro-areas of society in particular, so the consistency of new lexical units is manifested in functional terms as well. The author makes classification of the layers of borrowed vocabulary in terms of functioning foreign words, including aspects of their adaptation.
