Abstract

Autonomic functions , both sympathetic and vagal/ parasympathetic, are found to be deranged in hypertensive subjects. Autonomic dysfunction has been demonstrated before hypertension is established, as well as in its early stages. This was a case -control study involving a cross sectional examination of students/subjects / participants aged 17 – 19 years , both males and females. From a selection of those fulfilling the criteria of case group , having at least one hypertensive parent and control group whose no parent has hypertension. 30 subjects was selected by simple random sampling for each group. In our study it was found that Parasympathetic variable (.E : I ratio) when compared between 2 groups was not significant but Sympathetic variable(HGT) when compared between 2 groups was found to be significant. This indicates that offspring of hypertensive parents are susceptible to future development of Hypertension. Therefore they should maintain their sympathovagalbalance to reduce the incidence of estabilished hypertension and its associated complication. .
