Abstract

Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) has been conducted on the ferroelectric domain structure in Pb(Zr, Ti)O3 (PZT), SrBi2Ta2O9 (SBT) and Bi4Ti3O12 (BTO). Using space group analysis it may be shown that only 90° and 180° domain walls can exist in PZT, whereas in SBT and BTO, which both have layered perovskite structure, anti-phase boundaries (APBs) may also exist. APBs in SBT have been identified using TEM observations, but have not been found in BTO. Based on the in-situ TEM study on the mobility of polarization domains in SBT, a new switching mechanism is proposed, which may explain the difference in fatigue properties between PZT, SBT and BTO.
