Abstract

Space group analysis shows that there should exist five types of domain walls in SrBi2Ta2O9 (SBT), namely: (1) 90° domain wall, (2) anti-phase boundary (APB), (3) 90°-APB, (4) 180° domain wall and (5) 180°-APB. The first four types of domain walls have been observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Under electron beam heating, the mobility of three types of domain walls (90° domain wall, APB, and 90°-APB) has been studied by in situ TEM observation. It is revealed that there is a high density of APBs in SBT, and the new 90° domains prefer to nucleate and grow along them. According to the fatigue dynamics and the polarization switching mechanism, it is shown that APBs play a crucial role in the fatigue-free behavior in SBT.
