Abstract

This paper presents the study of the effects of the Magnesium Silicates on the crack initiation. The most fascinating part of this study is the propagation of the crack in magnesium alloys under a static load. Detailed fractography of the fracture surfaces of the cast Magnesium alloy revealed that the crack was initiated from silicon inclusion that had probably originated from the sand mould and had been washed throughout the casting on the advancing metal stream. The examination of the fracture surface shows the crack propagated to failure in brittle mode.Recommendations to reduce the risk casting defects and flaws are proposed in this study.
