Abstract

The over-exploitation of natural resources and dumping of waste materials due to mining and processing stage needs to be reduced. Also, there is a need for the alternative materials in the construction industry. In this study waste foundry sand (WFS) and granite waste (GW) are the waste materials that are used as the alternative material in the concrete. High rise building and skyscrapers are need of the today, due to the increase in the population. High strength concrete will be a choice for the construction industries, for executing the construction without compromising the strength and stability of the structure. Hence, in this study high strength concrete grade, M50 is selected and its mix proportion was found. The waste foundry sand is partially replaced for fine aggregate. The percentage of partially replacement of WFS are taken as 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, 30% by the weight of the fine aggregate. The percentage of waste granite is fixed as 20% based on the literature review. The concrete cubes and cylinders were casted for the varying percentage of waste foundry sand with 20% granite waste. The compressive strength test and split tensile strength of partial replaced concrete specimens were tested. The mix 5 showed optimal results same as that of the control specimen. Hence, the WFS and GW can be used as better alternative construction materials in the construction field.
