Abstract

A research study on the mechanism of oxidation of pyrite has demonstrated clearly that pyrite samples from various geological origins can be leached to completion in the presence of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. The complete leaching of pyrite in the presence of bacteria, implicating the effect of a limiting pH value, provides a significant break-through in the mechanism of sulphide oxidation. This result demonstrates that previous speculation on the formation of a protective reaction layer on the surface of sulphide particles, which accounted for their incomplete oxidation (or the toxicity of metal in solution), is invalid for iron pyrite.
