Abstract

Summary Respirometric studies showed that rhizosphere soils were metabolically more active than the control soil, there being no significant difference between the root and tuber rhizosphere. Comparing the effect of plain and autoclaved tuber extracts on the metabolic activity of soil, it was found that with autoclaved extract the rate of oxygen uptake was higher and the over-all attack on the substrate more rapid. Similarly, comparing the effect of tuber extract and pure KCN solution, it was noted that pure KCN solution was toxic and inhibited oxygen uptake even in low concentrations, whereas with the tuber extract, though the concentration of KCN was quite high, no such effect was found.
