Abstract

Summary The growth inhibition zones of three strains of Rhizobium sp. by either surface-sterilized seeds (as well as dicotyledon, cotyledon or seed coat) or autoclaved seeds of two Lima bean or six Cowpea cultivars indicate the presence of antirhizobial substances. The effect differed according to parts, treatments and cultivar of the seed as well as the used strain of R. sp. The antirhizobial substances exist in whole seed parts, thermostable (121 °C) and some thermolabile, and water-soluble or partially insoluble.
