Abstract

Big physics departments in the UK will end up with even more PhD students, following changes agreed last month by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). Under the new rules, the number of “quota” studentships that the council allocates to a university department will be set in proportion to the projected value of its research grants from EPSRC. The changes, to be phased in over two years, will begin in 1996/97. The Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council (PPARC), however, has decided to leave the rules for its quota studentships unchanged. It also plans to increase the number of PhD studentships it offers by at least a fifth. Between them EPSRC and PPARC fund the bulk of British physics PhD students.
