Abstract

When the old Science and Engineering Research Council was split into the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council (PPARC) and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), particle physicists and astronomers gave three cheers for the recognition of the special nature of their areas, not least the fact that “wealth creation” from their researches would usually be a very very long way downstream. However, the rest of physics was transferred to EPSRC, where it sits with applied areas of science, including materials and information technology, and the cheering was more muted. It is true that many physicists are, in fact, funded by EPSRC's materials and IT programmes. But more fundamental research is funded by the physics programme, and it is in this area that problems can arise (Physics World December 1995 p3).
