Abstract

Particle physicists and astronomers have expressed concern over government plans to abolish their funding body, the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council (PPARC). Under the proposals, a new research council responsible for large facilities would replace the Council of the Central Laboratory of the Research Councils (CCLRC). The new council would administer the UK's contribution to international bodies such as CERN and the European Southern Observatory (ESO), a job currently undertaken by PPARC. In addition, the government proposes that PPARC's other main function – the funding of UK university research – be handed over to the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).
