Abstract

Abstract The effect of quenching rate, vacuum annealing and nitrogen treatment on structure and magnetic properties of the Nd 8 Fe 86.6 Nb 5.4 (=Nd 1.05 Fe 11.3 Nb 0.7 ) ribbons was studied. Rapid solidification suppresses an ordering of Fe dumbbells in the Th 2 Zn 17 -type structure. Partially and fully disordered structures show considerable enrichment in Fe and Nb. The fully disordered phase can be identified as that of the TbCu 7 -type structure. The intermediate, partially disordered phase was found to be the most interesting: unlike the perfect 2:17 and 1:7, it showed a magnetic hardening after nitriding. The ribbons of the 1:7 structure after vacuum annealing and subsequent nitriding show a remanent magnetization of 66 emu/g and an intrinsic coercivity of 2.75 kOe. X-ray diffraction analysis does not confirm the supposition that this magnetic hardening is caused by the formation of a metastable ThMn 12 structure.
