Abstract

Voltage gated ion channels are transmembrane proteins that allow ions to pass through the cell membrane triggered by changes in membrane potential. They play key physiological roles in action potential generation and propagation including the transmission of the nerve impulse. Their native function and dynamics can be modulated by drugs which are classified as pore blockers and gating modifiers. The latter group include natural peptides that interact with ion channels with striking selectivity and potency.
