Abstract

The structural changes were investigated in polymers of olefill series (polyethylene, polypropylene, polybut-1-ene, poly-4-methylpent-1-ene, polystyrene, poly-3-methylbut-1-ene) which take place at 20 kbar pressure at room temperature in combination with shear deformation. According to IR and X-ray structural analysis data it was concluded that some of the polymers have their crystal lattice altered by these conditions, while others become amorphous. Conformational changes can occur in the macromolecular chains. No solution of the chains of one polymer in the other could be detected when the behaviour of crystalline polymer mixtures exposed to high pressures and shear deformation was investigated.
