Abstract

The results of stress corrosion and corrosion tests of the AlZn5Mg1 alloy of different tempers are shown to be related to test solution composition. The most susceptible to stress corrosion cracking was the underaged alloy tested under constant load in HC1- containing solutions. The comparison of stress corrosion and corrosion tests shows that the cracking may be considered in terms of hydrogen-related crack propagation. The remarkable degradation of the underaged alloy is assumed to relate to the grain boundary microstructure.
