Abstract

Optical-gain measurements have been carried out, for the first time, in various samples of CdS excited by a nitrogen laser in the temperature range between 80 K and 300 K. Spontaneous spectra show an additional band at the long-wavelength side of excitonic band A-LO; the same band gives stimulated emission up to room temperature. The dependence of stimulated emission on temperature and pumping and the magnitude of the measured gain are consistent with a recombination mechanism due to an exciton-electron collision process.
