Abstract

Publisher Summary This chapter discusses a study to analyze the steroid concentrating mechanism in the sow's ovarian vascular pedicle. The sows of the Polish Large White breed weighing 120–150 kg after the second farrow were used. Estrus was observed 6–7 days after weaning and was designated Day 0. On different days of estrons cycle, laparatomies were performed under general anesthesia. The ovary with the ovarian pedicle vasculature was isolated by many double ligations and transferred under the stereomicroscope. The ovarian artery was connected with the middle uterine artery by cannula, which was passed through a peristaltic miniflow pump and through a water bath. The blood pressure in the ovarian artery was about 10–13 kPa. In 35 experiments, ovarian venous blood for hormones estimating was collected by cannula inserted into utero-ovarian vein, about 20 cm below the ovary. The results showed that testosterone level in the blood plasma taken from the ovarian artery branch 3 cm below the ovary was statistically significant higher than that collected from the ovarian artery 20 cm below the ovary.
