Abstract

T HE SYSTEMATIC study of social stratification has been impeded by the lack of a preliminary analysis of status.2 Class, caste, and egalitarian types of social organization are essentially variant modes of status distribution, and require a preliminary analysis of status itself for their proper comprehension. The desiderata here are: first, a clear-cut distinction between status and the other main varieties of social position,3 and second, a description of the types of status and their interrelations. These are the chief topics of the present article.
