Abstract

The number of road and street accidents in Iran, based on formal statistics, is very high; surveys reveal that it is 10 times the average rate found elsewhere in the world. In this paper, traffic accidents in Khuzistan province and Ahvaz, one of the largest cities in Iran, are studied based on various factors including the number of accidents; type of accidents; number of fatalities; and the age, gender, and type of traffic violation. The amount of annual damage imposed on society has been calculated and at last some recommendations and suggestions for a reduction in the number of accidents in Iran are offered and discussed.
