Abstract

The stability of force-free magnetic fields in an axisymmetric, cylindrical, degenerate plasma is considered. It is shown that, under certain conditions, instabilities can arise as the plasma cools, confirming Tayler's results for non--force-free fields. It is suggested that such instabilities may take place in pulsars as they spin down, leading to possible field decay and accounting for the absence of long-period pulsars.
