Abstract The stability of force-free magnetic fields is investigated in case the prevailing magnetic fields and the perturbations have cylindrical symmetry about an axis. A variational procedure is described for solving the characteristic value problem associated with the equations of motion. The characteristic frequencies are computed by using a one-parameter trial function It is found that there are three modes of propagation for any disturbance. One of these modes is independent of gravity and is always stable. The second mode is only slightly dependent on gravity and is also stable. The third mode is markedly dependent on gravity. It is this mode which can be stable or unstable, depending on the values of the parameters involved. The criterion for instability is given.
