Abstract
The reaction 12C( 12C, 8Be) 16O leading to a number of states in 16O has been studied between E c.m. = 22.0 and 27.5 MeV. Most of the data exhibit fluctuations characteristic of intermediatestructure resonances. For reactions leading to the 11.09 MeV 4 + in 16O a gross-structure resonance is observed at E c.m. ∼ 25 MeV. We have investigated the spin of this 12C- 12C resonance via the reaction 12C( 12C, 8Beα) 12C at E c.m. = 25.0 MeV. The reaction products were detected in coincidence at angular separations around 180° in the centre of mass. The resulting 8Be-α angular correlations are sensitive to the spins of the 12C- 12C resonances. The 8Be-α angular correlation suggests J π = 16 + for this gross structure resonance at E c.m. ∼ 25 MeV in agreement with other work.
