Abstract

We have investigated 12C 12C resonances via the reaction 12C( 12C,αα) 16O. The reaction products were detected in coincidence at angular separations around 180° in the centre of mass. The resulting α-α angular correlations are sensitive to the spins of the excited resonances. The reaction was studied over the centre-of-mass energy region 19–32 MeV. The excitation functions reveal the presence of a number of intermediate-structure resonances. Many 12 + and 14 + resonances have been identified while there is evidence for 16 + strength at the highest energies. In addition a broad resonance is observed at E c.m. ∼ 25 MeV for the reactions which proceed via the 18.54 MeV 8 + state in 20Ne to the 6.92 MeV 2 + (or 7.12 MeV 1 −) state in 16O.
