Abstract

Abstract SPECIALISATION IN SOUTH AFRICAN SOCIOLOGY. GROUP DYNAMICS: A brief outline is given of the historical development of group dynamics, with special reference to the discovery of the importance of the small group for human behaviour. The field of group dynamics is defined with an indication of the most important variables in the small group, as well as the different levels of analysis in small group research. The place of Group Dynamics in the field of Sociology is analysed, and it is shown how research findings on the small group could contribute to general sociological theory. Finally stock is taken of the coursework and research in group dynamics being done at South African universities. The conclusion is drawn that this field of study is rather neglected al some universities, and that group dynamics has not yet developed as a specialised field at the universities in South Africa.
