Abstract

Spectral studies of praseodymium(III) and thulium(III) in zinc sodium sulphate and lithium sodium sulphate glasses in the visible and near-IR regions have been carried out. From the observed band positions and their intensities, Racah ( E 1, E 2, E 3) spin-orbit (ξ 4f) and Judd-Ofelt intensity parameters ( Ω 2, Ω 4, Ω 6 ) are evaluated by least-squares analysis. Eigenvalues and eigenvectors are evaluated by diagonalizing f 2 (and f 12) matrices. Radiative transition probabilities A and radiative lifetimes τ R are calculated for the excited states 3P 0, 3P 1 and 1D 2 of praseodymium(III) and 1G 4 of thulium(III). It has been observed that the intensities of the bands of both ions are higher in the case of zinc glass than in the case of lithium glass while the lifetimes of the laser transitions are in the reverse order.
