Abstract

Optical absorption spectra of erbium(III) ion in certain sulphate glasses have been studied for the first time in the UV-VIS and NIR regions. From the observed spectra, the spectroscopic parameters such as Racah ( E k ), spin-orbit ( ξ 4f ) and configuration interaction ( α ) parameters have been calculated by the method of least squares. The Judd-Ofelt intensity parameters ( Ω λ ) were determined from the observed oscillator strengths of the bands. Radiative transition probabilities ( A ), branching ratios ( β ), integrated cross sections ( Σ ) and radiative lifetimes ( τ ) are calculated for the excited fluorescent levels 4 I 13/2 , 4 I 11/2 , 4 I 9/2 , 4 F 9/2 , 4 S 3/2 , 4 F 7/2 , 4 F 7/2 , 4 F 5/2 , 2 H 9/2 and 4 G 11/2 of Er(III) in different sulphate glasses.
