Abstract
Sound attenuation characteristics of single and double wall barriers with openings, such as might be found along a suburban roadway, were studied using acoustic scale model experiments. The model experiments were carried out using techniques and equipment developed by Lyon [Lyon and Cann, “Acoustical Modeling in Urban Environments,” Inter-Noise '74 Proc. 457 (1974)]. A scale factor of 64:1 was employed with measurements being made above both reflective and absorptive surfaces. Experimental results correlated closely with analytical predictions based on specular reflection and simple diffraction theory. The results indicate a significant deterioration in excess attenuation for both single and double wall barriers as openings are made in the barriers.
