Abstract

The Functional Characteristics of Euphemisms in Sosial Media Advertisements Summary The study describes the functions of euphemistic units used in English commercial and social advertising. Euphemism in social media is used as a refinement of words in new forms of words, phrases and sentences of meanings that tend to be negative and harsh. Recently, the world has paid great consideration to the sosial media in many fields of life. Due to this consideration, the need for euphemistic expressions becomes one of the most important matters in many fields, especially in advertising. The author highlights that euphemisms are a big part of both social and commercial advertising, although they do carry different messages. When used in commercial ads, euphemisation is largely a tool allowing to describe a product vividly and catchy while at the same time observing etiquette rules. When used in social ads, on the other hand, euphemisms help unveil some problematic social issues of public importance and make people reflect on them.
