Abstract

The Xia Dynasty, that ruled between the years 407 and 431, was founded by He-lian Bobo, a the descendant of the Tiefu Huns. He-lian Bobo became more powerful with the capture of Chinese capital Chang An in 418. After this success, an inscription narrating the achievements of the founding leader He-lian Bobo was erected in Tongwan his capital city, and his accomplishments were engraved on stone. This paper translated and analysed the inscription included in the He-lian Bobo’s biography found in the Jin Dynasty Records. The source sheds light to a wealth of information from Bobo's personal attire to his friendship with his boon companion Chigan A-li and his struggle against the Tabgachs. Moreover it deciphers the connection between the Xia and Chunwei tribes and the lineage that extended to He-lian Bobo. Keywords: He-lian Bobo, Xia Dynasty, Chunwei, Inscription, Jin Shu.
