Abstract

Compression-ignition engines are widely used for commercial transportation because of their more fuel economy and high Torque. But study indicates diesel derived from crude oil may become extinct in coming twenty years. To reduce this problem use of Bio-diesels derived from vegetable oils in Compression-ignition engines was investigated. Due to their less pollution to atmosphere and good fuel economy Bio-diesels can be considered as a good alternative to diesel in Compression-ignition engine[5]. But Raw-vegetable oil is having high viscosity. Viscosity can be reduced by transesterification process with suitable catalyst to obtain neat Bio-diesel. In the current research the use of lemon-peel oil methyl ester and its blends from 10% to 40% by volume was investigated. The blends such as LPME10 (% Lemon-peel oil methyl ester & 90% Diesel), LPME20 (20% Lemon-peel oil methyl ester & 80% Diesel), LPME30 (30% Lemon-peel oil methyl ester & 70% Diesel), LPME40 (40% Lemon-peel oil methyl ester & 60% Diesel) are experimented and compared with base diesel. The results showed improvement in Brake specific fuel consumption & Brake thermal efficiency for LPME20 blend while higher blends showed increased consumption & less brake thermal efficiency due to their less Calorific-value. Carbon monoxide & Hydro-carbon emissions were drastically decreased, while oxides of Nitrogen are slightly higher for LPME20 blend. To reduce Oxides of Nitrogen Exhaust gases are recirculated and mixed with the fresh air in the range of 10-30% for LPME20 blend. The result indicates increase in brake specific fuel consumption and decrease in brake thermal efficiency with increase in EGR percentage.CO and HC emissions increased with increase in EGR percentage[2]. Oxides of Nitrogen were drastically decreased for 10% EGR. But the combination of LPME20 blend and EGR showed encouraging results compared to base fuel diesel.
