Abstract
The extraction of tungsten(VI) from aqueous hydrochloric or nitric acid solution by 3-hydroxy-2-methyl-1-phenyl-4-pyridone (HX) dissolved in chloroform has been studied. Tungsten(VI) is quantitatively extracted from the aqueous solutions in the range 0.4–2.0 M hydrogen ion concentration. By increasing or decreasing the acid concentration, the extraction of tungsten decreases and at pH>2.4 practically all the tungsten remains in the aqueous phase. The extraction of tungsten with HX is very simple, fast and selective. Tungsten can be separated from all metals except vanadium which are otherwise extracted with HX. The composition of the extracted tungsten(VI) species existing in solution and in the solid state were studied. A complex with the formula WO 2X 2 was isolated from the chloroform solution.
