Abstract

The final disposal of waste should be in spaces organized specifically for this purpose, based on its origin, and considering the current legislation. This study was based on the following question: Is the destination of solid waste in Teresina consistent with the Brazilian National Policy for Solid Waste? The general objective was to analyze the final disposal of solid waste in Teresina from the perspective of compliance with the current legislation on the matter. The methodological procedure consisted of bibliographic and documentary research and field study to understand the problem related to destination of solid waste and its consistency with the Brazilian National Policy for Solid Waste in Teresina, state of Piauí, Brazil. This study was carried out in 2018 and the results showed that the sanitary landfill is the environmentally correct way for final disposal of solid waste, since it enables a proper treatment of such wastes. The Teresina sanitary landfill started as a simple landfill consisting of a controlled landfill, and during the period of this investigation, the Teresina sanitary landfill was being built, as confirmed through an interview carried out with the responsible agency and observations during a visit to the site.
