Abstract
In this comment I shall describe and discuss the development of sociology of law in Italy in recent years from two points of view: firstly, the way in which sociology of law has emerged as an autonomous discipline and has gained academic legitimacy; and secondly, the debates in which sociologists of law are currently engaged. While my attention will be focused on two journals Sociologia del Diritto and La Questione Criminale which, in different ways, may appropriately be seen to fall within conventional definitions of sociology of law, I shall also briefly outline the social and political context of which they constitute a part.
