Abstract

This paper investigates the social dimension of letters as efficacious speech acts. An exploration of Synesius’ letters shows that letters are not only metaphorical social performances that create and preserve friendship, but that they can also be put into oral performance through public readings which have an impact on the social bonds between the author, the addressee, and the audience.
