Abstract

The choice of materials for one of the most critical structural components of fusion reactors, such as the first wall, is the result of a trade-off between different and often conflicting requirements. The problem of checking whether or not a material can withstand the design operating conditions requires taking into account the complete set of relevant properties. The programme SMILE, based on a simple one-dimensional model, was developed as part of a broader experimental activity focused on the first wall design problem of the NET/INTOR reactor. The purpose of the programme is: (i) to assess the behavior of the candidate structural materials; (ii) to identify the limiting failure mechanism and the critical value of the property involved; and (iii) to provide a reference procedure for evaluating the performance of different materials and the effects of the different operating conditions.
