Abstract
This study conducted several case studies on assessment of life-cycle for environmental and economical aspect of different liquid biphasic systems as well as multiphase systems. Assessment of life-cycle was conducted to compare the behavior and performance of different materials, solvents, production routes, and systems for decision making. The liquid biphasic systems discussed in this study includes polymer system, ionic liquids system, and organic solvent-based system, whereas the multiphase systems discussed in this study includes biogas and filtration system for palm oil mill effluent, treatment system for wastewater, and production systems for bioplastics. The four phases for assessment of life-cycle include the goal and scope definition, analysis of inventory, assessment on the impact, and interpretation of results were discussed in the conducted case studies. The challenges and uncertainties encountered during the case studies on the assessment of life-cycle for these systems were analyzed. Lastly, the future works that can be carried out to mitigate the uncertainties and improve the reliability and accuracy of the decision made based on the life-cycle assessments were proposed.
