Abstract

The Society of Ottoman Music was founded by Ismail Hakki Bey in March 1909 at the flat above the Fevziye Coffehouse. Ismail Hakki Bey, while he was the president and director of the Ottoman Society of Music, applied to the Ministry of Education to have apermit to open a private music school. After the permission was granted, The School ofOttoman Music, the first private music school in the Ottoman State, was inaugurated onJanuary 5th 1910. This study aims to shed light on the biography of Ismail Hakki Bey and his activities for the development and popularizing of Turkish music via The School of OttomanMusic founded by him
