Abstract

Extensive efforts are being made to develop newer hard coatings for 13/4 martensitic stainless steels (MSS) to improve its erosion resistance. In this regards 5 wt.% micron sized TiC was added to WC-10Co-4Cr to form modified powder. The modified powder and WC-10Co-4Cr powder was deposited on 13/4 MSS by high velocity oxy fuel process (HVOF process). The hardness of the modified coating, WC-10Co-4Cr and uncoated steel was found to be 1241, 1050 and 302 VHN respectively. The diamond polished specimens were subjected to slurry erosion test for 48h in a slurry pot tester. It was found that polished WC-10Co-4Cr coating had the best erosion resistant properties followed by modified WC-10Co-4Cr coating and 13/4 MSS. The volume loss due to erosion of modified coating was found to be 78% less than that of 13/4 MSS.
