Abstract

This article describes the development of the national system of education in Slovenia. It provides a brief overview of the historic, political, and demographic background which plays a major role in the development of the education system and is also closely related to the question of Slovenian national identity. The current education system, spanning from preschool to university, is presented through its structure, operation, and developmental trends. Slovenia's integration into the European Union opened its education system to international influences and globalization while at the same time triggered some national reflexes. The development of a future education system in Slovenia will be guided by the best responses politicians will be able to produce in addressing demographic, climate, energy, and economic challenges.
