Abstract

This chapter deals with the alignment of higher education and research with economic competition between companies for their positioning in the marketplace and the accumulation of economic capital through the generation of competitive advantage, with focus on its impact on research. Universities are understood as enterprises competing for the ongoing accumulation of economic and symbolic capital, resulting in an assimilation of the academic to the economic field called “academic capitalism.” It implies the application of market thinking in higher education and research, with profound impact on the advancement of scientific knowledge and training of the next generation of scholars.
