Abstract

Phosphorus containing heterocycles attracted much attention in recent years because of their unique properties and applications in fields such as catalysis, medicine, and materials. Among various phosphorus heterocycles, six-membered rings with one or more heteroatoms are an important class of heterocycles. Several methods including transition metal assisted catalysis have been developed in the last decade to synthesize six-membered phosphorus heterocycles. Six-membered rings containing trivalent phosphorus atom(s) find applications in coordination chemistry and catalysis, whereas pentavalent phosphorus compounds are used in material application. Similar to acyclic phosphorus compounds, saturated rings possess chirality if phosphorus is unsymmetrically substituted; on the other hand, fully unsaturated rings are planar and display aromatic character. Synthesis of six-membered rings containing trivalent or pentavalent phosphorus atoms is reviewed in this article.
