Abstract

We report high-resolution optical studies of the luminescence spectrum of Cr 3+ ions in MgO. Five sharp lines in the excitation spectrum of linear 〈100〉 (Cr . Mg V ″ Mg Cr . Mg) are shown to originate on three different Cr 3+ donor centres from which excitation is transferred to the 〈100〉 (Cr . Mg V ″ Mg Cr . Mg) centre acting as an acceptor. From the measured Eu-Ev splittings of the donor energy levels it is deduced that the three donors are Cr 3+ ions perturbed by the presence of the nearby dimer.
