Abstract

This paper presents the single-phase nine-level converter based STATCOM controlled with the fuzzy logic controller (FLC) and proportional integral (PI) controller. The FLC and PI controllers are used to control STATCOM for reactive power compensation and power factor correction. The STATCOM proposed in this paper can supply or absorb the reactive power to/from system. The absorbed/delivered reactive power improves the power factor of the point of common coupling (PCC). The obtained results show that, after STATCOM addition the power factor of the PCC is improved as compared to, the situation without STATCOM. There are two controllers implemented in STATCOM, one controller is for DC voltage regulation (which is used to generate the reference signals from the change in phase angle), and second controller is for reactive power regulation (which is used to generate the modulation index). The controllers output are fed in to the phase shift carrier sinusoidal pulse width modulation (PSPWM) to drive power converter switch. In last the results of FLC and PI controller are compared.
