Abstract

AbstractVinyl‐addition polynorbornenes are versatile templates for the targeted design of high‐performance materials for various applications such as membrane gas separation, micro‐ and optoelectronics, fuel cells, sensors, and catalyst supports. The cornerstone of the synthesis of these compounds is the choice of catalyst used for polymerization. Previous review articles focused on two‐ and three‐component catalytic systems with cocatalysts used for vinyl‐addition polymerization (VAP). Hence, this Review discusses the advances in the design and development of single‐component neutral and cationic catalysts for the VAP of norbornenes. The catalyst structure, catalytic activity, and molecular weight characteristics of the polymers produced using these catalysts are elucidated.
