Abstract
Geriatric patients are particularly sensitive to medication-related side effects, which also holds true for the antipsychotic drugs. Those of particular concern in the elderly include the anticholinergic side effects, which further impair cognitive function, parkinsonian events, orthostatic hypotension, cardiac disturbances, reduced bone mineral density, sedation, tardive dyskinesia, stroke, and cognitive slowing. It should also be noted that elderly patients have multiple medical problems such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, dementia, and arthritis, and take multiple medications. The patients, their family members, and caregivers often have their own views on this issue. This article reviews some of these issues and addresses the side effects of the currently available atypical antipsychotic agents.
