Abstract
Multiply excited configurations of the n = 3 singlet complex in the Mg sequence are plunging configurations in that they lie in the continuum at low stages of ionization and descend into the bound spectrum as the nuclear charge Z increases, crossing many configurations with which they may interact. Strong short-range interactions have been found for selected Z values. Energies and wavefunction expansions are reported. A sensitivity of the wavefunction composition to the relativistic shift correction is demonstrated.
