Elizabeth Walker Mechling is Associate Professor and Chair of Marketing in the School of Business and Economics, California State University, Hayward, California 94542. Jay Mechling is Professor and Director of American Studies at the University of California, Davis, California 95616. This is the revised version of a paper presented at the Organizational Folklore Conference, sponsored by UCLA, the Skaggs Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Humanities, and convened March 10-12, 1983, in Santa Monica, California.
