Abstract
This chapter provides a comprehensive plan of Shiraz in the Safavid period, based on the newly found documentary evidences, and subsequently examines the relation between royal and sepulchre gardens and the city as revealed by this plan. The European travellers of the Safavid period give an idea of the relation between the urban and natural landscape of Shiraz and its gardens through their descriptions and views of the city. The chapter also provides a plan drawn through the synthesis of previous studies, the accounts of the European travellers, and unexplored graphical and textual documents, mainly in Engelbert Kaempfer's manuscripts in the British Library. The oldest plan of Shiraz is a drawing by Carsten Niebuhr in 17653 that shows the walled city and part of the surrounding plain. The palace built by Emamqoli Khan inside the walls of Shiraz was according to Chardin close to a great hospital, the Dar ol-Shafa.
