Abstract

This chapter presents a description of hospitals operating in the cities of Iran during the Safavid period (1501-1722). Available sources on the subject are actually quite limited: in addition to some references in the texts of Muslim authors, descriptions are found in the accounts of European travelers who visited Persia at that time. Safavid period of hospitals and clinics were existed in Tabriz, Qazvin, Mashhad, Isfahan, Ardabil, Yazd and Tehran. Some cities such as Tabriz and Isfahan had more than one hospital based in the same period. Some of these hospitals employed eminent physicians of the time. Some hospitals in the Safavid period were nearby religious institutions such as mosques and mausoleums. The chapter talks about some renowned physicians and their writings on hospital activity.
